| "The day was outstanding. We really did enjoy ourselves and most importantly we felt we did something good for our community." | | | | Hitesh Jalani - Scientist | | | O2h are a community aware company and from September 2005 have been working with on a number of programmes. The approach is quite simple, O2h people understand that we have a contribution to make to the community in which we do our work, not at some unspecified point in the future, but now, and as part of our life journey, however small that contribution is. O2h encourages contribution, partnerships and connections with local NGO’s and the community. O2h takes its work in the community seriously. The first stage is always to establish a personal connection based not on solving anyone's problems, but of giving of ones love, time and energy. The second stage is to explore ways in which O2h can add value to their lives by deploying our skills. O2h has four continuing community programs in 08/09 - time at a home for dispossessed old people, reading to the blind students to assist in their education, playing cricket with the mentally handicapped and helping Pratham with a children's reading initiative (science curriculum education for slum children). | | | O2h has previous worked with Manav Sadhna, based at the Gandhi Ashram, on a TB project; a Women’s Rag Picker project, a science class for slum children, a study skills class at a low-income women’s college, a blood donation event, a community construction project and the collection of litter from some of the architectural sites of India. O2h also gets involved in one off programmes such as the transportation of a group of 20 children who shockingly in the India of 2008, still sleep on the street, to join us at our research centre for an afternoon bhajiya (Indian snacks), reading, games and play in the garden with the whole O2h team. Further plans are in place to participate in the work of a destitute Women’s group. | | | The O2h team have made great progress with their sincerity and spirit of the work that has been undertaken in the community. O2h have two working Saturdays when most of these activities take place, but occasionally it takes place at other times of the week. The community work experience is shared with the team at the Monday morning team meeting. To continue to inspire the team to participate in community work and extend horizons, guest speakers and social entrepreneurs are invited to meet the team and several such events have now taken place. A number of team social events are laced with a community theme such as the SEVA café (an innovative restaurant concept with a community service message) and the annual team days which are held at the ESI (Environmental Sanitation Institute) which embodies many of the community teachings of Gandhi. | | | | Please click here to see one such email of the work done. | | | | | | | | | | | | |
