Welcome to our second newsletter covering exciting updates on 02H and our sector to our clients and friends! Skilled outsourcing to India has continued to gain momentum with companies around the globe – and with its large and youthful demographic, India is starting to be regarded as one of the “workforces of the world”. It is clear that an India strategy is on the agenda of all pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies both large and small – but now the world is also now on the agenda of Indian biopharma companies. India has built on its historical strengths in manufacturing and generics to press aggressively into provision of research services. With strong performance on the Bombay Stock Exchange, publicly listed Indian biopharma companies are diversifying into product development programmes of their own and making aggressive overseas acquisitions. It is clear that India will have a leading role to play in future development programmes as it integrates itself further into the global biopharma economy. In this climate, O2H is poised to build on its unique position in providing high-quality outsourced services from India to the global biopharma industry. We’ve continued to progress well in recent months, adding a number of globally renowned pharmaceutical companies to our growing list of biotechnology clients. We’ve welcomed a number of new clients taking their first steps in India with 02H and are even more pleased to report that our existing clients have deepened their current relations with us. It’s an exciting journey and we hope you enjoy this latest installment of our news and views! Sunil & Prashant |

| A client’s view – “O2H lab equipment is second to none” | ||||||||||||
|
“As Oxygen Healthcare Research (O2H) was undertaking a critical project for Amura, I was invited over to undertake some technology transfer which was critical for a patent that our company is filing, spending a week in their lab facility in Gujarat. When I first saw to the lab, I was surprised and impressed with the quality of the equipment that the company had purchased since their inception. The labs are well set up and the chemists have all the necessary equipment required to do synthetic chemistry on milligram to multigram scales. |
|
|||||||||||
| O2H also appears to be built around a very strong team spirit with the company getting together once a week before work to play cricket. The team are hard working, well educated and show good problem-solving skills. Overall I felt that the week I spent in the O2H labs was not only very productive but very enjoyable as well.” | ||||||||||||

Development costs per drug rise to $843m per NCE Over the past 40 years, the US pharmaceutical industry’s inflation-adjusted research and development spend has increased from $2.5 billion to $27 billion. However, the number of new chemical entities (NCEs) produced per year in the US has only doubled. In the early 60s, this equated to an average of $179 million per drug against a conservative estimate of $843 million per NCE in 2000. |

In addition, during the same period, the time to market has almost doubled to
twelve years. As a result, drug company sales which increased by 10-15% a year
for most of the 1990s have now slowed to single digit growth.
